Major Road Improvements to Begin in Market Harborough

A major highways scheme designed to reduce congestion and boost safety in Market Harborough is set to get under way this summer.

The first phase will target Rockingham Road and forms part of a wider £5 million-plus investment in transport improvements across the town over the next five years, led by Leicestershire County Council.

The project will deliver junction upgrades and new cycling and walking facilities along the busy route in and out of Market Harborough.

Plans include:

• 350 metres of new three-metre-wide shared-use walking, wheeling and cycling path

• Five raised cycle and pedestrian priority crossings with illuminated road studs at side roads including the train station car park entrance, Halfords/Pure Gym retail park, Riverside, The Furlongs and Ashley Way

• A new signalised crossing on Rockingham Road

• Junction improvements at St Mary’s Road/Kettering Road and Gores Lane to ease congestion

• A proposed Traffic Regulation Order to make Clarence Street one-way northbound (subject to consultation)

• Environmental enhancements including tree planting and new street furniture

Work is scheduled to begin in August 2026 and is expected to be completed in early spring 2027.

Other elements within Phase One include traffic calming in Great Bowden, footpath improvements in Lubenham and the installation of new bus stops.
