Iron Age Remains Discovered on Proposed Housing Site

Archaeological remains dating back to the Iron Age have been uncovered on a proposed housing site in Market Harborough.
Excavations in fields off Farndale View revealed ditches and gullies thought to form part of a small prehistoric settlement or farmstead, along with deposits from later periods.
In total, 64 trenches were excavated, with features identified in 24 of them.

Experts say the site shows evidence of Iron Age, medieval, post-medieval, Victorian, and modern activity.
The land has been earmarked for 85 homes, and the plans are already proving controversial, with more than 130 objections submitted, including concerns about potential flooding.
Residents say the archaeological findings deserve further investigation.
Leicestershire County Council is advising developers on the next steps, while a Harborough District Council spokesperson confirmed that archaeological reports will be considered by the Planning Committee when deciding the application.
