One-Way Plan for Market Harborough Street Moves Forward

Highway bosses are pressing ahead with plans to make a Market Harborough road one-way in a bid to cut congestion and improve conditions for residents.

Under the proposals, traffic on Clarence Street would only be able to travel northbound, from St Mary’s Road towards Albert Road.

Leicestershire County Council has launched a final consultation on the scheme and says the change is intended to relieve congestion at the signal-controlled junction of Clarence Street, St Mary’s Road, and Kettering Road.

Traffic modelling suggests that without intervention, the junction will face severe delays as traffic levels rise.

Two-way traffic on the narrow Clarence Street has caused problems for several years and parked cars make it difficult for vehicles to pass.

Drivers are sometimes forced onto pavements and residents also report frequent damage to their vehicles.

The existing give-way priority feature will be removed if the scheme goes ahead and Councillor Sarah Hill told HFM that the proposal is designed to protect both drivers and pedestrians, while keeping traffic moving better:
