Peregrine Falcon Nesting Platform Approved For Symington Building

The green light has been given for a new peregrine falcon nesting platform on the Symington Building in Market Harborough.

Harborough District Council’s aim is to have it ready before next year’s breeding season, providing a safer, more sheltered spot for a pair of birds that have previously attempted to nest on the nearby church.

The nesting platform will be installed in the tower of the historic building on Adam and Eve Street, with building firm WW Browns – currently undertaking major restoration work on the site – agreeing to cover the cost.

It is also hoped that a live camera feed will be installed.

Planning permission was needed because of the building’s listed status and was granted by councillors at a meeting last night.

A council spokesperson said: “We are pleased that the planning application for the installation of a Peregrine falcon nesting tray in the tower of The Symington Building has been approved unanimously by the council’s planning committee.

“We hope that the improved shelter and better protection for eggs will prove attractive to these birds of prey and improve their chances of breeding successfully.

“We would like to thank WW Brown and Sons who will fund these works and provide live feed cameras which we are seeking to progress as part of this project.”
