Harborough Optometrist Urges Drivers to Keep Eyesight ‘Roadworthy’

A Market Harborough optometrist is urging drivers to make sure their eyesight is ‘roadworthy’ as visibility on the roads worsens through autumn.
Anthony Clarke, of Clarke & Roskrow Styling Opticians, says he’s seen a surge in enquiries following reports the government is considering mandatory eye tests for drivers over 70 to keep their licences.
At present, UK drivers must be able to read a number plate from 20 metres, have a visual acuity of at least 6/12, and maintain a sufficient field of vision.
However, the UK remains one of only a few European countries that doesn’t require formal testing when licences are renewed — relying instead on drivers to self-declare that their eyesight meets the standard.
