Temporary Reopening Planned For Drought-Hit Canal

Written by on 16th October 2025

It is hoped the Grand Union Canal through the Harborough area could temporarily re-open to allow boaters to move before winter.

A stretch of the canal, including Foxton Locks, has been closed since the end of July due to low water levels caused by drought — leaving some boaters stranded.

Repairs have been carried out to the locks at Foxton during the closure to boats

The Canal and River Trust says reservoir levels remain low, but with rain expected, a temporary reopening is planned from October 27th.

If the move is confirmed, locks, including at Foxton, would be open daily from 10am to 3pm for seven days.
