Market Harborough Teacher Named Primary Music Teacher of the Year

A Market Harborough teacher has been named Primary School Music Teacher of the Year in a national competition.

Mandy Thompson from St Joseph’s Catholic Academy impressed judges with her passion and dedication to making music accessible for every pupil.

As part of the award, the school will receive over £3,000 for new music equipment.

Mandy told HFM she is honoured to be recognised for doing what she loves:

The competition, run by Classic FM in partnership with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, recognises exceptional teachers who inspire young people through music.

The judges described Mandy as “enthusiastic, tireless, visionary and passionate about giving every child the chance to learn an instrument no matter their background”.

“Mandy has changed the culture at St Joseph’s by inspiring senior leaders to implement weekly music lessons for every year group.

“She has written the Music Curriculum for the school, and Leicestershire Music Hub have since awarded St Joseph’s the Gold Award for Excellent Music Provision!”

Pupils at St Joseph’s have been quick to congratulate Mrs Thompson and spoke to HFM:

The award is based on thousands of votes and nominations, and countless inspiring stories told about some of the nation’s most dedicated musical educators.

Headteacher Bernadette Dabbs said: “We are absolutely delighted and immensely proud of Mandy.

“Her passion for music and her belief in every child’s potential have transformed the life of our school.

“She inspires pupils and staff alike, and this national recognition is richly deserved. It means so much to our whole community.”
