Food Waste Collections To Launch Next Year

A food waste collection service across Harborough is set to launch late next year.

Harborough District Council is continuing to plan for the roll-out after the government told all local authorities they must introduce the service.

Storage caddies will be provided to residents and HDC is now considering giving each household a starter-pack of bin liners for use in them, at cost of between £25,000 and £30,000.

A report by officers to be considered next week by the council’s Cabinet says: “While it involves an initial cost to the Council, providing a starter roll of bin liners will hopefully encourage residents to use them consistently, helping to keep the caddies clean and prolong their lifespan.

“Like standard black bin bags, its reasonable to expect residents to purchase their own replacements as the cost is minimal and aligns with common household waste practices.”

The government has provided the council funding of over £1m for the purchase of the storage caddies and new collection vehicles, ahead of the launch of the service.
