Symington Building Restoration Work To Begin Soon

Major restoration work to Market Harborough’s historic Symington Building will begin next month.

The nine-month project costing £1.1m will see upgrades to external masonry, windows and the roof of the premises on Adam and Eve Street.

The former corset factory, built in 1889, serves as Harborough District Council’s HQ and is also home to the town’s library, museum, job centre and banking hub.

John Tillotson, chairman of Market Harborough Civic Society, said: “It is great to see the council taking its custodianship of a prized heritage asset seriously.

“The Symington Building is Grade II listed and an important building which should be cared for and looked after.”

Scaffolding will be erected around the premises while the work takes place.

Cllr Phil Knowles, Leader of Harborough District Council, said: “The council made budget provision earlier in the year for the upkeep of these important landmark features in the town.

Residents will see scaffolding this summer on two of our valued assets as we look to keep them in the condition that they deserve for tenants, traders and residents.”
