A drink driver who led Police on a dangerous high-speed chase before being arrested near Lutterworth has been jailed for a year.
Jason Mongan failed to stop for police officers in New Parks, Leicester before driving at over 80mph in 40mph speed limit areas during a 22-minute pursuit, which ended over ten miles away in a car park in Ullesthorpe.
A crew from the National Police Air Service was scrambled to assist officers tracking the grey Peugeot 5008 as it continued ignoring the officers in pursuit as the driver also overtook on solid white lines approaching oncoming traffic, drove on the wrong side of the road and drove through a red light.
A roadside breath test was carried out and Mongan blew 72 – more than twice over the legal limit – and provided evidential specimens of 57 and 61 in police custody.
Mongan, 30, of Mere Road in Bitteswell pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, drink driving and failing to stop when he was sentenced at Leicester Crown Court.
He was also disqualified from driving for 30 months and ordered to carry out an extended re-test.
PC Stephen Bates, who was the pursing officer, said: “Mongan’s actions that day could have resulted in serious injury, or even a fatality. The fact that no other road user, or Mongan himself, was injured that afternoon was very fortunate.
“Thankfully his driving was captured on dash camera and the NPAS camera, which provided crucial evidence in court, and I am relieved that he has accepted responsibility for his actions that day.”
