Community Rallies To Support Homeless Man

There has been an outpouring of support for a man living in a hotel in Market Harborough after being made homeless.

Keith Squibbs was evicted from his family’s home in Weston by Welland three weeks ago, after being unable to meet massive mortgage repayments.

He had moved back from America to care for his elderly mother before she died and then discovered she had taken out a lifetime mortgage and owed £380,000.

Keith turned down temporary accommodation in a shared house offered to him by North Northamptonshire Council, saying it was not suitable for his medical conditions, which have left him unable to work.

He suffers with a neck condition meaning he cannot raise his head and has a blood condition, which causes clots on his body.

Keith has had to sell family possessions and many of his belongings to help fund the hotel bill and is hoping to find affordable rented accommodation somewhere in Market Harborough.

Nearly £2,000 has been raised in a few days to support him after a crowdfunding appeal was launched by Paul Quinn and Serina Leeanne from Quinn’s House Clearances, who met Keith when they were employed to clear the house.

Keith has many connections to Market Harborough – his father used to run the GL Squibbs and Sons electrical shop in Church Street.

He told HFM he has been overwhelmed by people’s kindness:

Keith has also thanked The Village in Market Harborough which have provided tokens for hot meals and The Wood Oven situated outside, which donated food to him.

Serina and Paul spoke to HFM about the outpouring of support and why they wanted to help Keith:

As Keith lived in Weston by Welland which is in Northamptonshire, it is North Northamptonshire Council which is responsible for providing temporary accommodation, but Harborough District Council says it is also aware of the case.
