Council Considers Buying Own Vehicle Fleet For Over £6m

Harborough District Council could spend £6.3m buying a new fleet of refuse lorries and other vehicles.
The authority is proposing the move as part of an extension to its current waste contract, which is needed due to a delay in government confirming changes in legislation surrounding bin collections.

The current fleet owned by contractor FCC is nearing the end of its life and the council says purchasing vehicles itself is the most cost-effective way forward.
The council is drawing up a business case for the investment after the allocation of funding was approved by the ruling coalition administration.
The opposition Conservative group refused to support the move, saying it wanted more details about the plan.
If the purchase it went ahead, road sweepers and grounds maintenance vehicles would also be bought.
