Harborough Traders Welcome Clampdown On Violent Thieves

Written by on 12th April 2024

Traders in Market Harborough have welcomed new action to deal with violent shoplifters.

The government is making assault on a shopworker a specific criminal offence, with courts able to impose six-month jail terms, or unlimited fines.

There has been a rise in thefts from shops in Market Harborough in the past year and some members of staff have been assaulted.

The Central England Co-Op has also welcomed the action, having campaigned for the standalone criminal offence since 2018.

Under the new crackdown, persistent shoplifters could also be forced to wear tags to track their movements.
