Mobile Phone Movements To Give Insight Into Shoppers’ Habits
Written by HFM News on 29th January 2024
Mobile phone movements are to be used to get a better insight into shoppers’ habits in Market Harborough and Lutterworth.
New state-of-the-art footfall sensors have been placed in town centres to track people who sign-up to free Wifi and agree to be part of the research.
The data will help Harborough District Council get a better picture of shopper and visitor behaviour, like the busiest days of the week and busiest times, how long shoppers are in town centres for and which areas attract the most people.
The three-year project has received £69,700 from the government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund and the council is stressing the information gathered will not be traced back to individuals or used for any other purpose.

Cllr Phil Knowles, Leader of Harborough District Council and Cabinet lead for Culture, Leisure, Economy, and Tourism, said: “Understanding the footfall patterns in our town centres is crucial for making informed decisions that support our local businesses and enhance the overall experience for residents and visitors.
“This investment shows we value our town centres and want them to continue to thrive”.
“The council has been reassured by the suppliers of the technology and has carried out all necessary checks to ensure that absolutely no personal data will be automatically collected by the footfall trackers in Market Harborough and Lutterworth.
“It will not be possible for the council or any other parties to identify anyone by their mobile signal or wifi usage. The trackers, and their use by the council, are fully compliant with privacy laws.
“The trackers will help local businesses to identify the busiest times in the town centres and enable them to adjust their opening times accordingly to benefit their business and meet the needs of shoppers.”
