Tributes Paid To David Johnson

Tributes have been paid to a man who dedicated decades to music and history in Market Harborough following his death aged 83.

David Johnson was organist and choirmaster at St Dionysius Church for 40 years before retiring in 2022 and spent 19 years as Musical Director for the Market Harborough Choral Society.

He had suffered with dementia in recent years and his wife Barbara says he will be remembered for being ‘a gentle, kind and selfless man with a lifelong passion for history and music’.

Mr Johnson was also heavily involved with Market Harborough Historical Society and played a vital role in saving Harborough Museum, when it was threatened with closure.

He also secured a ‘green plaque’ in the town centre, in recognition of Nobel Prize winning scientist Sir Henry William Bragg.

Mr Johnson was an Honorary Fellow in History and a former Dean of Arts at the University of Leicester, which has extended its deepest condolences to his family and friends.

His funeral will be held at St Dionysius Church at 12.30pm on Friday.
