Delight For Drivers As Road Re-Opens After 10-Month Closure

Written by on 6th October 2023

A road connecting Fleckney with Great Glen has re-opened after being closed for over ten months.

Part of Station Road was shut in January so a bridge over the railway could be demolished and re-build, with the work by Network Rail originally planned to take six months.

Various complications resulted in the re-opening being delayed twice, but the road closure has now been lifted and traffic is running along the route again.

Traffic is flowing over the new bridge

Drivers have been expressing their delight on social media and a Network Rail spokesperson told HFM: “Station Road bridge has reopened to traffic this week after vital work to facilitate overhead electric wires as part of the Midland Main Line Upgrade was carried out.

“We know this has been an inconvenience to drivers and local residents and we are sorry for the disruption this has caused, but this work will allow for new, greener, quieter trains to operate in the future.”

Temporary traffic lights are currently in place at the bridge, as traffic has to pass over it in single-file, with permanent signals set to be installed.

Drivers will face another road closure in the area soon, with work to take place at the bridge on Newton Lane near Newton Harcourt.

The spokesman added: “Newton Lane bridge is scheduled to be closed until spring 2024 while our teams carry out further electrification work in the area, however we are still agreeing the road closure with Leicestershire County Council.

“We are sorry for the disruption that this may cause.”
