Historic ‘Ghost Sign’ Restored To Former Glory In Market Harborough

The flaky remnants of a historic sign painted above a shop in Market Harborough has been restored to its former glory.

Duncan Murray Wines in Adam and Eve Street has had the ghost sign – which reads Taylors – hand-painted by specialist contractors to bring it back to life.

The sign was first put above the former fish and chip shop and restaurant in around 1952 when Mr Morris Taylor set-up a takeaway in the front part of the property, before moving it one room back, with the entrance from Sulley’s Yard.

He then turned the whole of the front part of the shop into a cafe.

Mr Frank Taylor then bought the premises from his father in 1967 and over time he built a cafeteria in the gardens of 1 2 & 3 Sulley’s Yard, seating 70 to 80 people.

He later converted the upstairs of the three cottages into two restaurants with seating for about 200, before the premises later became a bookmakers and eventuality home to Duncan Murray Wines.
