Council Staff Could Leave Symington Building As Major Review Launched

Written by on 24th July 2023

The majority of Harborough District Council staff could move from the Symington Building as a major review is launched into how the building is used by the authority.

Since the pandemic less than 40 workers have been using Adam and Eve Street offices daily, with the majority working from home on certain days.

The coalition administration is now looking into potential alternative uses for the part of the building occupied by the council, to bring in additional cash, including a potential ‘major project.’

It could see staff moved to offices elsewhere and new investment in customer services functions across the District.

The Symington Building

The Symington Building has been the council’s headquarters for many year and the Assets Review will also look at all other premises owned by the council.

Council Leader Phil Knowles said: “A review of the council’s use of The Symington Building could release considerable funds to invest in offices elsewhere as HDC bases for staff and customer service facilities across the district.

“It could enable investment in Leisure and other community needs. It can help protect the future of the District Council, our Staff and Services.

“However, we recognize that the Council is not the only organisation based in the building, which is why we need a review of the Council’s assets and options.

“The potential options for The Symington Building will be made public as soon as they are worked up and the public can see the ideas.

“We will be holding open days at the building so that people can see the whys etc. for themselves. The important thing is that the residents and the staff can be sure that we are looking at this to protect and secure the future. Doing nothing is not an option’’
