Building Costs For New Accommodation For Homeless Rise By Over £100,000

The cost to create new accommodation for the homeless in Market Harborough town centre has increased to over a million pounds.

Harborough District Council originally budgeted around £956,000 for the project on Roman Way, but significant increases in construction costs means an extra £136,000 is to be put towards it.

A council spokesperson said: “The increase in costs is to allow for inflation of construction materials.

“The original budget price was calculated based on the initial feasibility proposal for the project and since then there have been significant increases in costs in the construction industry.”

Work is set to start later this year to demolish a derelict house to make-way for a new three-storey building, which will house nine apartments, to provide temporary housing.

The new facility will help save the council money in the long-term, as it will be less reliant on paying for accommodation within the private sector.
