An investigation has been launched after part of a train carrying materials to an engineering work site near Market Harborough de-railed.

Network Rail say two wagons, which were carrying ballast, came off the tracks near the town at around 11pm yesterday.

The stretch of track between Leicester and Kettering remains closed while the engineering work is completed and East Midlands Railway has a replacement bus service is in operation.

Tara Scott, East Midlands Infrastructure Director for Network Rail said: “Last night at around 11pm, two wagons derailed on an engineering worksite near Market Harborough. Nobody was injured and all work was suspended while teams worked quickly to get the wagons safely back on track by 5am this morning.

“Throughout the day, our teams are completing this important work to get trains running normally again as soon as possible. We’re sorry for the impact this is having on services and would urge passengers to check their journey.”
