A tree from the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations is to be planted in Market Harborough’s Welland Park.
The sapling helped form the 69-foot-tall ‘Tree of Trees’ sculpture in front of Buckingham Palace in June.
The park is one of just five places in Leicestershire and 300 nationwide selected for the project, which aims to create a living legacy to honour her late Majesty and form part the The Queen’s Green Canopy – an initiative to plant trees to mark the Jubilee year.
The Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire, Mike Kapur OBE, who is His Majesty The King’s representative, selected the recipients of the special trees.
Either a Rowan, silver birch or alder tree will be presented to Harborough District Council, who will then arrange for the planting.
LOROS, Rainbows Hospice, Bradgate Park Trust, Abbey Park in Leicester are other recipients of the project.
Designed by Thomas Heatherwick, the “Tree of Trees” sculpture sought to put the importance of trees at the heart of this historic milestone to celebrate Her Majesty, who planted over 1,500 trees all over the world throughout her 70-year reign.
The trees have been gifted evenly across the UK in proportion to the population, with each county receiving at least one tree.
