Arsonists Believed Responsible For Large Field Fire Near Desborough

Written by on 8th August 2022

A fire that destroyed crops in two fields on the outskirts of Desborough yesterday is believed to have been started deliberately.

The blaze off Arthingworth Road also spread to hedgerow, vegetation and fencing at the side of the A6, which led to the closure of the road due to smoke posing a hazard to drivers.

Five fire crews were sent to the scene just after 4pm and were able to contain the flames, with the help of the farmer who created a fire break with farm machinery.

A water carrier also attended the incident to support the firefighters.

A spokesperson for Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service told HFM: “On the approach the first crew saw large amounts of smoke coming from the field and called in reinforcements. At its peak, five appliances and a water carrier were at the scene working hard to contain the flames.

“Two fields, one measuring approximate 100m x 100m and a second measuring around 500m x 500m were destroyed along with a large section of hedgerow, roadside vegetation and fencing.

“They used in total six hose reel jets, two ultra-high pumps and beaters to get the fire under control and stop fire spread. The farmer also assisted by creating a fire break with farm machinery.

“The incident was scaled down at around 6.30pm but crews remained at the scene until the early hours of this morning (August 8) damping down the hedgerow and fields. An after fire inspection will be carried out later today to check for hotspots and ensure the scene remains safe.”
