Written by on 3rd August 2022

38 drivers have been arrested during the first two weeks of Leicestershire Police’s summer drink and drug drive clampdown.

The majority stopped were over the alcohol limit, although six people were found under the influence of drugs.

Eight arrests were made at the scene of crashes and the highest road-side breath test was nearly five times the legal limit.

On average three drivers a day have been caught since the campaign began – 31 men and 7 women have been charged, nine of whom were aged 24 or under.

The summer campaign is running for six instead of the usual four weeks this year, due to the high number of drink and drug drive arrests made during the first six months of this year,

According to the latest national figures, there were approximately 220 drink drive related deaths in 2020, which is around 15% of all deaths in reported road collisions.
