Council To Bid For £9m Of Government Funding For Town Centre Improvements

The District Council is to bid for £9m of Government funding to pay for major improvements in Market Harborough town centre.
Many of the enhancements are suggested in a new Masterplan for the area, such as creating a Cultural Quarter between Adam and Eve Street and Church Square.
The bid includes a request for up to £2.5m for the development of a new two-screen cinema and café/bar, with designs on three potential sites being finalised.

Improvements at Harborough Market, to create additional space for food and drink facilities and the potential of late-night opening, is another part of the bid, which will be made to the government’s ‘Levelling Up Fund’ next month.
Another element is for funding to establish a grants scheme to support building owners converting under-utilised space above town centre shops into much-needed flats and bedsit accommodation.

A decision on if the bid has been successful is expected in the autumn.
