Fears For Future Of Village Church

A historic village church near Market Harborough could close unless residents help run it.

St Nicholas Church is Marston Trussell has been without a church warden for two years and only two people are on the Parochial Church Council, responsible for the upkeep of the building.

A village meeting has been called for next Saturday in a bid to get villagers to take on the roles, or form a new ‘Friends Group’.

Rector, Rev Canon Miranda Hayes, told Hfm: “There is an informal meeting in Marston Trussell Village Hall on 12^th March, to discuss what the future of St. Nicholas’ Church might look like.

“It will principally be an opportunity to both gather and share information, so we have a clearer idea of how the village feels about this historic and beautiful building.

“I certainly hope that St. Nicholas’ Church will remain at the heart of village life, but the burden of looking after the building is falling upon the shoulders of just two local people, and that cannot continue.

“I am really keen to try and involve the wider community in sustaining its life, worship and witness, and very much hope that the meeting will stir up interest and commitment.”

If support cannot be found, a new use for the church building could be sought and a search launched for a suitable buyer to take it on.

The meeting will take place at the Village Hall at 11am on Saturday March 12th.
