A Police officer who was shot in the face while protecting an elderly couple in Desborough has been nominated for a national bravery award.

Sergeant Dave Cayton, who was working alone, was hit by several ball bearings while tackling Marshall Coe at a house in Neuville Way last November and despite intense pain continued to restrain him until back-up arrived.

It transpired the weapon repeatedly discharged at the officer was a high-powered ball bearing pistol and PS Cayton was taken to hospital where he underwent medical procedures to remove a number of ball bearings from his face and head.

Coe, 40, formally of Neuville Way, was jailed for 11 years for wounding with intent and being in possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

At the end of the court case, His Honour Judge Rupert Mayo recommended PS Cayton for “the highest possible commendation” from the Chief Constable.

Speaking at the time, Northamptonshire’s Police Chief Nick Adderley said: “Dave is an incredible police officer and I was so proud to hear of Judge Mayo’s comments regarding his bravery – commendations such as these are only handed out in very special circumstances which really demonstrates the level of courage Dave displayed that day during this absolutely horrific incident.”

Sergeant Cayton will attend the Police Federation Bravery Awards ceremony next month.
