Fears Car Park Could Be Built On Green Space Near HMP Gartree

Written by on 14th June 2021

People living near Gartree Prison fear a car park could be built on green space near their homes.

The Ministry of Justice is reviewing options for the land it owns in Stuart Crescent, at the corner of Gallow Field Road, which has around 30 trees on.

Residents have mounted a campaign to stop any redevelopment, because of the impact it would have on nature and conservation and potential noise and light disturbance.

Although the MoJ has not confirmed they want to build a car park, homeowners were told by people surveying the site, that that is the plan.

Cllr Paul Bremner, Ward councillor for the area, was contacted by concerned residents and visited the site:

The MoJ say any proposals would be shared before a planning application is submitted.

A spokesperson said: “Whilst we are reviewing the land for the possibility of future use, no final decisions have been made.”.
