£100k Fundraising Drive Launched In Memory Of Raj
Written by HFM News on 21st April 2021
A campaign has been launched in memory of a popular Market Harborough business owner, that aims to raise £100,000 for the NHS.
Raj Aggarwal, who ran Insomnia Coffee Shop at the Symington Building, died from Coronavirus a year ago, aged 51.
In the weeks before he fell ill, he delivered free food and drink to staff at Leicester hospitals, to show his support for them during the pandemic.
Raj, who lived in Great Glen, also owned Spar shops in Wigston and Sheffield and was well-known for his generosity in helping others.
The ‘Do As Raj Would Do’ campaign is raising money to support the Leicester Children’s Hospital Appeal, to help build the East Midlands first dedicated children’s hospitals on the site of the Leicester Royal Infirmary.
It will also support building a ‘Well-Being Garden’ at the Sheffield Northern General Hospital.
Raj’s wife Sunita, who has launched the campaign with support from Spar, spoke to Hfm:

Lisa Davies, Director of Leicester Hospitals Charity, said: “Raj’s generosity was something that we are so grateful for and his work was a shining example to us all.
“A year since the start of the first lockdown we want to pay tribute to Raj.
“We are humbled that Sunita wants to continue his legacy and the efforts she is going to and the money she will raise will make such an enormous difference.
“Our hospitals still very much need the support of everyone.
“We hope to have a room in the new children’s hospital named after Raj, so that his name and inspirational charity work can live on for years to come through the care of the first East Midlands dedicated children’s hospital.”
A SPAR Spokesman said: “A F Blakemore and SPAR are proud to support the #DARWD campaign.
“Raj was a great ambassador not only for SPAR but for all for independent retailers. He is missed by everybody across the industry. I’m delighted that so many retailers and suppliers are getting behind the campaign I cannot think of a more fitting way to remember Raj.”
