An Army bomb disposal team was called to Market Harborough late last night, after a suspected wartime mortar bomb was found in the River Welland.
The alert was a false alarm though – the object turned out to be an old car part.
Officers say it had been left on riverbank, close to Lidl off Kettering Road, after being discovered in the river earlier in the day.
They were alerted at 11.30pm, with the Army team arriving within an hour.
After checking the item, they confirmed it was not an explosive device.
A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police told Hfm: “Officers were called at 11.28pm yesterday (Tuesday) by a member of the public following concern regarding an item which had been found in the river nearby earlier that day.
“The item had been left on the riverbank and it was reported it may be a mortar device.
“Police attended the area and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team were called.
“EOD confirmed the item was not as reported and removed the item.
“No properties were evacuated during the incident.”
