Harborough Community Stalwart Handed MBE

A Market Harborough man who has dedicated the over 30 years to helping the community has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday honours.

Roger Dunton has been recognised for his service on the District Council, where he has represented the Welland ward as a Liberal Democrat councillor since 1987, along with his involvement in various charity and community groups.

He told Hfm it came as a shock and a surprise when he heard, and is a real honour:

Roger is Chairman of the Howard Watson Symington Memorial Charity, a member of the Harborough Twenty 12 Lions Club and was an active member of the Jubilee Foodbank until lockdown.

He spend almost 30 years working as an on-call firefighter in Market Harborough and was also chairman of governors at Farndon Fields Primary School for almost 30 years.

Roger now works for the Harborough Medical Centre as a driver, delivering prescriptions to the elderly and vulnerable.

• Amelia Collin-Patel, 22 from Thurnby, has also been handed an MBE for her voluntary work – most recently helping young people during the pandemic.
