Councillor Gets Stuck In Lift For Nearly Two Hours

A Harborough councillor missed a meeting last night after getting trapped in a lift at the Symington Building for nearly two hours.

Amanda Nunn was eventually released at 7.45pm, when an engineer arrived to deal with the problem that caused it to break down.

The member for Bosworth had got into the lift just before 6pm, while making her way to the Council Chamber at the HQ on Adam and Eve Street.

Although council meetings are currently taking place remotely, Cllr Nunn was due to attend in person to Chair of the Communities Scrutiny Panel.

Cllr Nunn told Hfm: “It certainly was not the Thursday evening I’d expected.

“I would like to say staff who were in the building were very supportive during the incident, providing me with regular updates and checking that I was ok.”

A Harborough District Council spokesman said: “The alarm was raised at 18.04 on Thursday evening and the on-call duty officer attended, keeping the councillor updated on the engineer’s progress.

“When the councillor was released from the lift, she was offered a drink and she returned home.

“The engineers have been called for urgent return today to assess what caused the fault and to carry out any work required to rectify it.

“The central lift in The Symington Building is serviced on a quarterly basis in line with the contract agreement, with the last service taking place in July 2020.”
