A warning is being issued about the dangers of swimming in Saddington Reservoir during another spell of hot weather.

The Canal And River Trust has put up new warning signs after concerns were raised about people taking to the water during the last mini heatwave in June.

The charity has also provided Harborough Police with rescue throw lines to put in patrol cars, should they be called to an emergency at the site.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue service has also been there in recent days, educating people about the dangers.

A Canal and River Trust spokesman said: “Even on hot days the water temperature can be very cold causing muscle cramps and making it difficult for even the strongest swimmers.

“There can also be currents and obstructions under the surface as well as waterborne diseases such as Leptospirosis which can cause blindness or even death.

“People are also known to jump into the water from bridges, locksides or even waterside buildings without knowing how deep the water is.
