Criminals are posing as Police officers to try to steal large sums of cash from people.
A warning is being issued after a woman from Market Harborough nearly fell victim to the so-called ‘courier scam’ – but for a taxi driver who became suspicious.
She had been contacted by a man claiming to be an officer investigating a major fraud at her bank.
A taxi was booked for her to withdraw thousands of pounds – which he said would then be collected – as part of the enquiry – before being returned at a later date.
On other occasions, taxis have been booked to collect debit and credit cards from peoples’ homes.
Over the past three months, five similar incidents have been reported in Leicestershire and 19 in Northamptonshire.
