Vandals Contributed To Traffic Chaos

Written by on 26th April 2019

It’s emerged vandalism and driver jumping red lights has contributed to traffic chaos on Leicester Road in Market Harborough in recent days.

There have been on-going problems with the lights failing at the Alvington Way junction.

Gas firm GTC has apologised as some of the faults were as a result of equipment failing, but on Wednesday evening vandals damaged signal wires that caused the lights to fail yesterday morning.

There have been further problems with drivers going through the lights on red when they have been operating normally.

The company says this has resulted into a safety system activating putting all the signals on red until they are reset manually.

The lights are due to be removed later today when work there is completed.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire County Council, which grants permits for roadworks, said: “Work is being carried out by Gas Transportation Company Limited and we’ve been working closely with them to resolve issues around the temporary traffic lights and we apologise for any inconvenience caused to road users.”
