Climate Campaigners Plan More Action

Young environmental campaigners are planning more protests in Market Harborough.

They are unhappy at how long it could take for Harborough Council to declare a ‘climate change emergency.’

They took to the streets last month with around 50 gathering outside the Symington Building and met with officials demanding the action, which would mean the authority pledging to do more to tackle climate change locally.

The Fridays For Future Market Harborough Action Group say other councils across England have declared the emergency much quicker.

The council say after the elections it will look to support the campaigners call and it is committed to environmental issues.

A spokesman told Hfm: “It was discussed at the meeting, that after the elections we will look to support any proposals and take them through the governance process, as well as continue to work with the wider community on green issues.

“The students were encouraged to be involved in any proposals as stakeholders and were also invited to attend the Council meetings where any proposal would be discussed.”
