Legal Fight Over School Transport Cuts

A legal fight challenging the decision to take away school transport for some disabled children across Leicestershire begins today.

The Judicial Review, taking place in Birmingham, will argue it breaches both Human Rights and the Equality Act.

Leicestershire County Council will stop providing minibuses and taxis for over 400 children, aged 16 to 18, from September, including a number in the Harborough District.

Although families will get a contribution to arrange their own travel, they say it will barely cover the cost of petrol.

The action is being taken by one family on behalf of all those who will be affected, including Molly Williams from Market Harborough, who has cerebral palsy, is visually impaired and can’t speak.

Molly, 14, who is in the video below, will be affected by the changes when she turns 16 and currently receives specialist transport to get to and from Birkett House Special School in Wigston.

Leicestershire County Council is not commenting, as the legal proceedings have begun.
