Prison Campaigners ‘Deeply Concerned’ At Revelations About Northants Jail

Written by on 2nd October 2023

Campaigners against a massive new prison being built near Market Harborough say revelations about a newly opened jail in Northamptonshire are ‘deeply concerning’.

Three guards at HMP Five Wells in Wellingborough have warned inmates are running the prison and if a chaotic culture doesn’t change, ‘someone’s going to get killed’.

The whistleblowers have told Sky News there are regular drunken cell parties and fights at the prison which opened last year and that corrupt employees bring in drugs and other contraband.

The ‘super prison’ proposed for land near HMP Gartree is based on the Northamptonshire jail and an announcement is due to be made next month on if the £300m development will go-ahead.

Diana Cook from Gartree Action Group spoke to HFM:

Security firm G4S, which runs Five Wells says it has ‘sufficient levels of staffing to run a stable, consistent and safe regime’

The Ministry of Justice has been approached for comment.
